Who hasn't hesitated in front of a bottle? The label stares back with that serious look, with strange words, golden seals, and numbers we don't always understand.
But behind every label there's a story: sometimes rigorous, sometimes a bit of marketing, and often… pure curiosity.

At BACO we like to tell it like it is, so today we're reviewing some myths, mistakes, and anecdotes hidden on the bottle's "little paper".

Font size matters (but not how you think)

On many labels, the largest text isn't the most important. Sometimes the brand name stands out, but the real treasure is in smaller print: the plot, the vintage, or even a special mention like "Viñedo Singular" (Single Vineyard).

BACO Tip: always pay attention to what seems secondary. That's often where the secrets are.

"Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva"… hierarchy or style?

Many people believe that a Gran Reserva is always better than a Crianza. Wrong.
They are different styles:

  • Crianza: fresher, with a short time in barrel.

  • Reserva: more refined, with bottle aging.

  • Gran Reserva: more complex, elegant, for special occasions.

It's not about better or worse, but about what you feel like drinking.

The 13.5% myth

You've probably heard it: "the more alcohol, the stronger the wine."
Well, no. The alcohol content indicates the level of sugar converted into alcohol, but not the intensity of flavor. There are 12% wines that seem explosive and 15% wines that are smooth.

Seals, awards, and medals

Is a wine with five medals better? Not necessarily.
Competitions often judge based on specific criteria, and not all are equal.

Tip: trust your palate more than the gold on the label.

The back label: the flip side also counts

Many only look at the front, but key information is hidden on the back: the winery, the grape variety, recommended serving temperature, even the story of who made it.
It's like the "making of" a movie.

Final curiosity: did you know…?

There was a time when wine labels were true works of art, hand-illustrated with unique typefaces. Today, some wineries are reviving that spirit to make every bottle a collector's item.

A label guides you, suggests to you, hints to you. But the real journey begins when you uncork and taste. At BACO, we always say: choose with your eyes, but decide with your mouth.
Because in the end, more than reading a label, what matters is experiencing the wine inside.
