After 20 years working together in a Riojan winery, Cristofer Ruiz and Jose Alberto Reinares decided to take a personal leap by making their own wine. As is customary in La Rioja during some celebrations, families who own vineyards and harvest grapes make a wine for the occasion, which can also be enjoyed by friends and acquaintances. In 2019, after the birth of Lucca (Cristofer's son), this pair of Riojan workers did just that. They loved the result and decided to bottle part of what they had made to release it to the market. This is how Sistole was born, "a contracting movement of the heart and arteries to push the blood they contain," a first heartbeat, let's say the birth of his son inspired this beautiful name. It was their first impulse to make wine.
Cristofer planted 1 hectare of vineyard with Maturana Tinta almost 9 years ago, divided into 3 plots at different altitudes, in the town of Clavijo (Rioja Oriental). One of these vineyards, at over 700 meters of altitude, seeking freshness to combat climate change, is where the grapes for this Sistole come from. They harvest early in 20 kg boxes. Once at the winery, the grapes are fully destemmed without crushing, then fermented in stainless steel for 7 to 8 days with some pump-overs and light punch-downs. The aim is not to extract too much (pyrazines). Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel. This is followed by 12 months of aging in 500-liter French oak barrels that have been used several times.
